Identify first, then treat

Black algae, mustard algae and green algae are best separated by how they behave—not by colour alone. Green algae usually forms soft film, patches or haze. Mustard algae often behaves like recurring yellow or tan dust in protected areas. Black algae is more consistent with persistent dark spots or colonies that resist normal brushing, especially on rough or porous pool finishes. Check the form of the deposit, the surface underneath it, brushing response and whether it returns in the same place before choosing a treatment.

Green water is not automatically algae. Dissolved metals, particularly copper, can also contribute to green or blue-green water. If the colour appeared suddenly after a chemical addition or does not behave like biological growth, confirm the water chemistry before adding more treatment.

Do not diagnose pool algae by colour alone

Pool algae types overlap in colour. Mustard algae may look tan rather than bright yellow. Black algae may look charcoal, blue-green or almost black. Green algae can begin as a dull wall film before the water itself turns green.

A stronger diagnosis comes from several clues pointing in the same direction. No single brushing result, colour or chemical reaction proves the algae type on its own.

2. Surface Rough plaster and pebble or smooth vinyl and fibreglass?
3. Brushing Does it cloud, smear, resettle or barely move?
4. Recurrence Does it return as dust or remain fixed in the same spot?

Surface type changes the probability

The same dark mark should not be interpreted the same way on every pool finish. Surface type does not prove the diagnosis, but it changes which explanation is more plausible.

Rough or porous finishes

Plaster, concrete, older pebble and aged mineral surfaces

Persistent black algae is more plausible where growth can establish in pores, pits, cracks and textured areas. Fixed dark spots around fittings, corners, drains and worn finish defects deserve closer inspection.

Smooth finishes

Vinyl and fibreglass

Algae is still possible, but dark or yellow marks have stronger competing explanations such as staining, embedded debris or contamination. Avoid assuming that every stubborn dark mark is black algae.

Brushing and recurrence are stronger clues than shade alone

Watch what happens when you brush

  • Green algae: commonly loosens into a visible film or cloud.
  • Mustard algae: can lift almost like fine dust or sediment.
  • Black algae: tends to remain as fixed dark spots after ordinary brushing.
  • Staining: usually does not behave like loose biological material entering the water.

Then watch what comes back

  • One yellow deposit after wind or heavy pollen is weak evidence for mustard algae.
  • Yellow dust that repeatedly returns to the same protected areas is more consistent with mustard algae.
  • A persistent dark spot in the same rough-surface location is more consistent with black algae than loose debris.
  • A broad developing green film is more consistent with active green algae growth.

Chemical response can help—but only with a surface-safe test

Organic growth and some stains may respond differently to a controlled treatment test, but chemical response should never be treated as a stand-alone diagnosis.

Do not place concentrated chlorine directly onto an unknown pool finish as a DIY spot test. Concentrated products can bleach, discolour or damage some vinyl, fibreglass, painted and coloured finishes. If a chemical or product manufacturer provides a surface-testing procedure, follow that product label and the pool-finish guidance exactly.

If the finish is unknown or the mark could be staining, skip aggressive spot treatment and confirm the likely cause first.

A chemical reaction does not identify the algae species.

A mark that changes may be organic, while a mark that does not change may still be black algae, mineral or metal staining, embedded debris or finish discolouration.

Could the dark mark be a stain instead of black algae?

Dark colour alone cannot distinguish black algae from organic staining, metals, embedded debris or changes in the pool finish.

  • resistant to normal brushing;

More consistent with staining

Flat discolouration without removable growth

  • may follow leaves, organic debris, a metal source or a water path;
  • can be brown, green, blue-green, grey or dark rather than one predictable colour;
  • requires a stain-specific, surface-compatible diagnosis before treatment.

Look at the form

Is it water haze, soft film, dust-like residue, flat discolouration or fixed dark spotting?

Check the finish

Rough plaster or pebble increases the likelihood of anchored black algae compared with a smooth finish.

Brush a small area

Note whether the material clouds the water, lifts like dust, smears or remains fixed.

Watch recurrence

Reappearing yellow dust and persistent dark colonies provide different diagnostic clues.

Confirm before chemistry

If algae and staining are both plausible, use a surface-compatible assessment before aggressive treatment.

When the problem is a widespread green or algae-affected pool

If the issue is no longer a small identification question and the pool has widespread green water, poor visibility or a heavy algae load, recovery should include water testing, brushing, circulation and filtration checks rather than repeated guesswork with chemicals.
