A red, rusty, orange or brown layer on the floor of a swimming pool after windy weather can be ordinary airborne soil, very fine mineral sediment, organic debris, staining or—less often—an algae problem. Why red and orange dust appears after windy weather

Airborne soil and mineral particles

Why Australian dust can look different from ordinary grey pool dirt

If the loose material has moved but an orange or brown area remains unchanged, investigate the surface itself rather than repeatedly brushing or vacuuming the same spot.

Has the film returned?

Reappearance matters more when there has been no new dust event and the same coating is reforming in similar areas. Compare this pattern with the pool's recent FC/CYA history before treating it as algae.

When vacuuming helps — and when it only redistributes the dust

Fine sediment is easiest to remove after it has settled. Move the vacuum head slowly enough that suction collects the material before the head pushes it back into suspension.

Signs the sediment is being removed

  • the cleaned area remains visibly clearer;
  • little or no coloured material appears at the return jets;
  • the water does not become uniformly cloudy;
  • the filter remains within its normal pressure and flow range.

Signs it is being redistributed

  • a large brown cloud follows the vacuum head;
  • the floor looks cleaner but the water becomes hazy;
  • particles can be seen returning through the jets;
  • the same sediment settles again soon after circulation stops.

Could iron be causing the orange colour?

It can, but an orange colour does not tell you whether the iron is part of a loose soil particle or part of a stain on the pool surface.

Iron-bearing particles in soil or dust

Natural mineral particles can contain iron-bearing material that gives sediment a red or rusty appearance. If those particles arrived after wind, sit loosely on the floor and vacuum away, the immediate problem is sediment removal.

Orange or brown surface staining

Mustard algae can resemble yellow or brown dust and may brush away easily. A brush test alone cannot confirm it. Look at the distribution, recent water chemistry and whether the material returns when no new external contamination has occurred.

Why the same dust keeps returning after vacuuming

The time between cleaning and reappearance matters. Sediment that returns within minutes points to a different mechanism from a new layer that develops after another windy afternoon.

Vacuuming too quickly

Ultra-fine particles can be pushed ahead of the vacuum or lifted into suspension before suction captures them. They then settle back onto the floor after the water becomes calm.

The filter is missing fine material

The filter is heavily loaded

What to check before adding chemicals
