Is it foam, return-line air or cloudy water?
These problems can appear together, but they have different causes. Identify what you are actually seeing before changing the pool chemistry.
Persistent surface foam
Small bubbles collect into patches and remain on the surface, especially around returns, steps, spillovers or water features.
Check first: recent algaecide, detergent residue, sunscreen, cosmetics, body oils and heavy bather load.
Air bubbles from the returns
Bubbles emerge directly from the return jets and usually burst quickly rather than forming a lasting layer.
Check first: pool water level, pump priming, pump basket and possible air entering the suction side of the circulation system.
Cloudy or milky water
The water itself loses clarity, with or without visible bubbles. This is a different diagnostic path.
What commonly causes pool water to foam?
Recent algaecide
Some algaecides based on conventional quaternary ammonium compounds can foam when the water is agitated. The effect may be most visible around return jets, waterfalls or other areas where air is mixed into the water.
Polymeric quaternary products commonly described as polyquat are generally formulated as low-foaming or non-foaming alternatives. Check the exact product label and active ingredient rather than assuming all algaecides behave the same way.
Sunscreen, cosmetics and body oils
Busy pool use can add sunscreen, moisturiser, cosmetics, hair products, sweat and body oils. These materials can contribute surfactants and organic contamination that make bubbles more persistent when the water is agitated.
Detergent residue
Laundry detergent left in swimwear or cleaning-product residue on buckets, brushes and other equipment can enter the pool and behave like a surfactant. Even a relatively small contamination event can produce noticeable surface foam.
Heavy bather or organic load
A high bather load can increase chlorine demand. If surfactants such as sunscreen, oils or detergent residue are also present, agitation may make foam more visible. A falling free-chlorine reading is therefore a reason to correct sanitation, but low chlorine by itself should not be treated as the cause of the foam.
Very low calcium hardness
Very soft water or very low calcium hardness may increase the tendency to foam, particularly when surfactants are already present. Confirm calcium hardness with a water test rather than treating visible foam as evidence that calcium is low.
pH and alkalinity
Out-of-range pH or alkalinity still needs correction because it affects overall water balance and sanitiser performance. However, foam should not automatically be labelled a pH or alkalinity problem.
Use the timing of the foam as the first diagnostic clue

What to do before adding more chemicals
Work from the likely source toward the water test. This avoids stacking products together and makes it easier to identify what actually changed.
Check recent products
Review algaecide, clarifier, cleaning products and anything else added during the previous day or two.
Review pool use
Consider heavy swimming, cosmetics, sunscreen, body oils and possible detergent residue from swimwear or equipment.
Test the water
Measure the chemistry before deciding whether sanitation or balance actually needs correction.
Remove debris
Skim the pool, empty baskets and remove obvious physical contamination from the water and circulation system.
Check circulation
Confirm normal return flow and attend to the filter if its condition or pressure indicates that service is due.

Which water tests matter?
The purpose of testing is not to find a single “foam reading”. It is to identify a sanitation or balance problem that may need correction while you investigate the likely surfactant source.

What if the foam started after algaecide?
Check the exact product before doing anything else
Read the label for the active ingredient, recommended dose and any warning about foaming. If a conventional quaternary algaecide was recently used, the foam can be a product effect rather than evidence that another algae treatment is required.
Do not keep adding the same product
Stop redosing, maintain normal circulation as appropriate for the pool and follow the product label. If excessive product is confirmed and foaming remains severe, partial dilution may be more appropriate than repeatedly adding another treatment.
What if the pool foams after heavy swimming?
If the pool was normal before a busy swimming session and foamed afterwards, start with bather load and products carried into the water. Test free chlorine and pH, remove debris, confirm normal circulation and check whether the filter needs routine cleaning or backwashing.
Sunscreen should not be removed simply to protect pool water quality. For outdoor pools, follow current sun-protection guidance and use an appropriate water-resistant sunscreen. To reduce other contamination, shower before applying sunscreen where practical, avoid unnecessary body oils and cosmetics before swimming, and rinse detergent thoroughly from swimwear.
When can partial water replacement help?
Partial dilution may be reasonable when a significant algaecide overdose or detergent contamination is known and persistent foaming is not resolving. After replacing a meaningful amount of water, retest the pool because fresh water can also change calcium hardness, alkalinity, salt and stabiliser levels.
Three things not to do
Do not automatically add more algaecide
If the product itself is contributing to the foam, another dose can increase the problem.
Do not raise calcium without testing
Very low calcium hardness can contribute, but visible foam is not enough evidence to justify adding calcium chloride.
Do not stack treatments
Adding algaecide, clarifier, oxidiser and balancing products together makes diagnosis harder and can create additional water-quality problems.
How to reduce repeat foaming
Use pool products at the labelled dose
Check the product type, pool volume and application instructions before adding algaecide or other specialty chemicals.
Limit detergent and cosmetic residue
Rinse swimwear thoroughly and avoid unnecessary oils or cosmetics before entering the pool. Do not compromise recommended sunscreen use for outdoor swimming.
Keep chemistry measured
Regular testing makes it easier to identify sanitation or balance changes before guessing from water appearance.
Maintain the circulation system
Keep baskets clear and service the filter according to its type, pressure behaviour and condition.
