Water should not continue to discharge through the waste line while a multiport valve is operating normally in Filter. To check the problem, dry the waste outlet, run the pump in Filter and see whether water continues to leave after the system has settled. Repeatable flow confirms that water is reaching the waste line during Filter operation, but it does not identify the failed valve component. How to Confirm Water Is Reaching the Waste Line in Filter Mode

The check can be done without opening the valve. Use the normal operating speed of the pump so the result reflects the way the system usually runs.

1 Dry the waste outlet Dry the end of the waste pipe or backwash hose. This prevents water left from an earlier Backwash or Rinse cycle from being mistaken for a new leak.
2 Check the valve position With the pump off, make sure the handle is fully seated in Filter and is not resting between positions.
3 Run normal filtration Start the pump at its usual speed and allow the circulation system to settle. Watch the waste outlet for two to three minutes.
4 Note any continuing flow Look for dripping, pulsing or a steady stream. If practical, collect the discharge for about 60 seconds so the result can be compared later.
5 Re-seat the valve Switch the pump off before touching the handle. Re-seat the valve in Filter, restart the pump at the same speed and repeat the observation.
6 Compare both tests If water again appears at the waste outlet after the system has settled, water is reaching the waste line during Filter operation.
Safety: never rotate a multiport valve handle while the pump is running. Switch the pump off before changing valve position. Do not remove the valve top or open the filter while the system is pressurised.

Residual Water or an Ongoing Leak?

Brief drainage after backwashing

Water can remain in a backwash hose or waste pipe after Backwash or Rinse. A few drops from an already wet outlet do not prove that water is bypassing the valve during Filter.

Dry the outlet and repeat the test after filtration has been running for several minutes.

Flow that returns during Filter

Dripping, pulsing or a steady stream that continues after the system has settled—and returns when the same test is repeated—shows that water is reaching the waste line when Filter is selected.

Inspection is still required to identify the component responsible.

A falling pool level alone is not enough to diagnose the valve. Evaporation and leaks elsewhere in the pool or plumbing can produce the same symptom.

Check Where the Water Is Appearing

Through the waste outlet

Water coming from the normal waste or backwash discharge point while Filter is selected indicates that water is entering a path that should normally be isolated in that position.

Around a fitting or pipe

Water around a union, sight glass, hose connection, fitting or cracked pipe is an external plumbing leak and should be treated as a separate fault.

No visible waste-line flow

If the waste outlet stays dry, this test has not confirmed a waste-line leak. Other sources of pool water loss should then be considered.

What Can Cause Water to Reach the Waste Line?

The outlet test identifies the abnormal flow path, not the failed part. Depending on the valve design and condition, inspection may find:

  • a damaged or displaced spider gasket, also called a valve seat gasket on some models;
  • grit, scale or filter media preventing a sealing surface from seating correctly;
  • wear in the rotor or key-and-cover assembly;
  • a weak or damaged spring or handle mechanism;
  • worn sealing surfaces;
  • a cracked or distorted valve component.

What to Do If the Waste-Line Flow Is Confirmed

Note the valve brand and model if they are visible, whether the flow is intermittent or continuous, and the pump speed at which it occurs. Inspection can then determine whether the problem is contamination on a sealing surface, gasket damage, wear in the rotor or key assembly, or damage to the valve body.

Any valve disassembly should follow the manufacturer's procedure with the pump switched off and the system depressurised. The correct repair depends on the valve model, condition and availability of compatible parts.

Do not cap the waste pipe as a repair. The connection is required for normal Backwash or Waste operation, and blocking it does not correct the valve fault.
