A Melbourne pool should not leave winter mode because the calendar says spring is close. It should change when its winter settings stop keeping chlorine, circulation and water condition stable.

02 The Pump Runs but Flow Is Weaker Longer runtime will not correct a circulation system that is already restricted.

Variable-speed pumps make this particularly important. A low RPM can be energy efficient, but the selected speed still has to provide enough flow for the equipment operating on that circuit.

03 Filter Pressure Moves Away From Its Clean Baseline The meaningful reference is the pool's own clean operating pressure.
Record filter pressure when the system is clean and operating normally. That reading becomes the reference for future diagnosis.
A generic pressure number is much less useful because filters, plumbing layouts, pump speeds and equipment configurations differ between pools.
If pressure rises
Increasing resistance can indicate that the filter is loading with fine debris, pollen, dust or other material. As spring approaches, the amount of fine material entering an outdoor pool can increase substantially.
Service the filter according to its type and the manufacturer's instructions rather than cleaning it only because a fixed number of weeks has passed.
If pressure drops below normal
It can indicate reduced water supply to the pump, low pool level, blocked baskets, suction-side restriction or another flow problem.
After the cause is corrected, filter pressure and return flow move back toward the pool's established clean operating baseline.
04 Steps or Walls Start Feeling Slippery Early biofilm or algae activity can appear before the water becomes visibly green.
Pay particular attention to steps, benches, corners and areas that receive weaker circulation. These zones can show the first signs of inadequate sanitation while the main body of water still appears clear.
A slippery film can indicate that sanitation is no longer keeping up locally. It does not automatically mean the whole pool needs aggressive treatment.

The surface stays clean after brushing, chlorine remains stable and the slippery film does not quickly return.
05 Chlorinator Percentage No Longer Matches the Result The displayed output percentage does not prove how much chlorine the pool is actually receiving.
Salt chlorinator production depends on more than the percentage shown on the control panel. Cell condition, flow, salt concentration, water temperature, runtime and manufacturer-specific control logic all affect actual production.
Some units reduce production or stop generating chlorine at low water temperatures. As conditions change in late winter, confirm how the specific chlorinator is behaving rather than assuming the displayed percentage tells the whole story.
Inspect the cell before increasing output
Scale on the cell plates reduces effective electrode surface and can interfere with production and flow through the cell.
Follow the manufacturer's cleaning procedure. Avoid routinely acid-cleaning a cell when it does not require it, because unnecessary chemical cleaning can reduce electrode-coating life.
Check Water Balance Before Increasing Spring Chlorination
Chlorinator output should not be used to compensate for a water-balance problem. Run a broader chemistry test before making a large seasonal adjustment.
Change the Pool in a Controlled Sequence
Changing several settings simultaneously makes diagnosis harder. A measured sequence shows whether the pool needed better flow, more chlorine production or a correction elsewhere in the system.

A professional check is useful when the pool does not respond predictably to measured adjustments.
