Water under a pool heat pump is often normal
A puddle beneath a pool heat pump does not automatically mean the unit is leaking pool water. Heat pumps naturally produce condensation while heating, particularly in humid weather. The useful question is where the water comes from and whether it stops when heating is switched off.
Why does a pool heat pump produce water?
A heat pump absorbs heat from the outside air and transfers it into the pool. As air passes over the cold evaporator coil, moisture in the air condenses on the coil and drains through the bottom of the unit.
Condensate from the base
Water normally collects in the base tray and leaves through drain openings or a condensate connection provided by the manufacturer.

How to check the water source without opening the heat pump
These basic checks can usually tell you whether you are dealing with normal condensate or whether the pool plumbing needs closer inspection. Do not run the circulation test if water is spraying from a fitting or reaching electrical equipment.
Start with a dry area
If practical, dry the paving and look for the first point where water appears: the base tray, a drain outlet, a union or nearby pipework.
Watch while it heats
Condensation normally appears while the heat pump is operating and may increase as the unit runs in humid conditions.
Switch heating off
Leave normal pool circulation running if the system allows it. Allow existing condensate to drain, then check whether fresh water continues to appear.
Compare fresh samples
If needed, compare the puddle with pool water using chlorine or salinity testing. Similar readings support a pool water leak.
Where a real heat pump water leak can occur
If fresh pool water continues to appear, check the visible plumbing before assuming the heat exchanger itself has failed.
Inlet and outlet unions
A loose union, damaged O-ring or incorrectly seated seal can drip whenever the circulation pump is running. Water may then travel underneath the cabinet and look like an internal leak.
Nearby valves and PVC fittings
Small leaks from bypass valves, glued joints or pipe fittings can run along the pipe before dripping onto the equipment pad, so the wettest point is not always the source.
Blocked condensate drainage
A blocked or poorly routed drain does not mean pool water is leaking, but it can make normal condensate overflow from an unexpected part of the unit.
Internal connection or heat exchanger
If fresh pool water is coming from inside the cabinet while circulation continues, an internal connection or the heat exchanger may be leaking. Do not remove electrical panels to investigate the source yourself.
What if the water is only condensation?
Condensation is normal, but it still needs somewhere to go. Poor drainage can leave the equipment area permanently wet even when the heat pump itself is working correctly.
