When a pool pump loses prime overnight, the basket may be partly empty by morning and startup may begin with air instead of steady water flow. The cause is usually a path that lets air enter or water drain back after shutdown. Start with the pool water level, skimmer behaviour, pump lid O-ring, suction valves, unions, drain plugs and plumbing layout before assuming that the motor or the whole pump has failed.

A pump that stays primed remains filled with water between operating cycles. If the basket level falls after shutdown, either air is entering the suction side, water is draining back toward the pool or another low point, or both are happening together.

Prime loss does not confirm motor failure

A motor can run normally while the pump struggles to reprime because the suction side is no longer sealed. Pump components can fail, but the symptom should be traced before parts are replaced.

A slight movement in water level under a clear lid can occur in some installations. It becomes a fault when the basket drains noticeably, the pump repeatedly starts with a large air pocket, or normal circulation takes too long to establish.

  • The basket remains full immediately after shutdown but drops over the next few minutes or hours.
  • The pump basket is partly or almost empty before the next scheduled start.
  • The pump surges, rattles with air or needs manual filling before it will establish flow.
  • Air continues to appear at the return jets after the normal startup purge has finished.

Common causes of a pump losing prime overnight

Check the likely causes first
Low water level or skimmer air draw. A low pool level, sticking weir door or restricted skimmer can pull air into the suction line, especially when the skimmer is the main source of flow.
Pump lid or O-ring fault. Dirt, flattening, twisting, cracking or uneven seating around the lid seal can let air enter without producing an obvious external water leak.
Suction-side fittings, valves or plumbing. Pump unions, drain plugs, valve stem seals, cracked fittings and individual suction branches can all admit air while the pump is operating.
Reverse drain-back. An elevated equipment pad, raised spa, solar loop or other high plumbing section can allow water to move backward when circulation stops.
Damaged pump component. A cracked strainer housing, damaged lid, failed plug seal or another defect around the wet end can prevent the pump from holding prime. These faults need inspection rather than diagnosis by symptom alone.
About check valves: a check valve can control reverse flow where the plumbing layout requires it. It cannot seal a leaking lid, union, valve stem or suction pipe.

What the timing of the symptom can reveal

Observe shutdown, operation and restart

The most useful clues are when the basket level falls, whether air appears while the pump is running, and whether the behaviour changes when a different suction line is selected.

The basket drops soon after shutdown. Check for a significant sealing fault, a direct drain-back path or a check valve that is not holding where one-way protection is required.
Return bubbles continue during normal circulation. Persistent bubbles after startup usually indicate air entering before the pump. Inspect the skimmer, lid seal, unions, valves and suction plumbing.
The problem began after basket cleaning. Recheck the lid, O-ring groove and sealing surface before moving to buried plumbing or replacing equipment.
The problem changes between skimmer and main-drain settings. The branch that produces the symptom deserves closer inspection.
The equipment pad sits above water level. Review the plumbing route, raised sections and any existing check valve for reverse drain-back.
Compare more than one pump speed

Test the system at its normal priming speed and its regular circulation speed. Greater suction can make air entry at a lid, union or valve more obvious. A partly filled clear lid at low RPM does not by itself prove a leak if the pump remains primed, flow is stable and no air reaches the returns.

The lid seal is exposed to dirt, heat, chemical residue and repeated opening. A small defect can admit enough air to disturb priming even when no water is visibly leaking from the pump.

  • Turn off power before opening the pump and confirm that the system is no longer pressurised.
  • Inspect the O-ring for cuts, flattening, hardening, stretching or twists.
  • Clean the lid, O-ring groove and mating surface before reassembly.
  • Seat the O-ring evenly and use only a lubricant suitable for the seal material and pump manufacturer.
  • Check the clear lid and strainer housing for damage that may be difficult to see while the pump is running.

When prime loss starts immediately after the basket has been opened, the lid assembly should be checked before more invasive work is considered.

Where suction-side air can enter

Plumbing before the pump operates under suction. A small opening can pull air inward while showing little or no water outside the fitting.

Skimmer and pool water level. Confirm that the water level is high enough, the weir door moves freely and the skimmer is not drawing a vortex.
Union directly in front of the pump. Check the union O-ring, alignment, thread condition and fitting body for looseness or cracking.
Suction valves and valve stems. Worn seals can admit air without leaving a large wet patch around the valve.
Pump drain plugs and strainer housing. Damaged plug seals or cracks around the wet end can prevent the basket from remaining flooded.
Individual suction branches. A change in behaviour when lines are isolated can help narrow the fault to a skimmer, cleaner or main-drain branch.

When a check valve is relevant

Confirm the plumbing requirement

A check valve may be required where water can drain backward after shutdown, such as an elevated equipment pad, raised spa, solar circuit or another high section of plumbing. In those layouts, a valve that is fouled, damaged or installed in the wrong position may allow the water column to fall.

Its role is limited to controlling flow direction. Installing a new check valve will not correct a suction leak at the pump lid, union, drain plug, valve stem, skimmer or pipework.

Avoid replacing the check valve by guesswork

First determine whether water is genuinely draining backward and whether the system is designed to rely on one-way protection. Otherwise the original air leak can remain after the valve has been replaced.

A practical inspection order

Move from simple checks to system faults
1. Check water level and skimmer operation. Correct obvious air draw before opening equipment.
2. Inspect the lid, O-ring and sealing surface. Pay particular attention if the problem began after basket cleaning.
3. Check unions, drain plugs and visible suction valves. Look for damaged seals, misalignment and cracked fittings.
4. Compare suction branches and pump speeds. Record when bubbles appear and whether the basket remains stable.
5. Review the plumbing layout and check valve. Confirm whether raised sections can produce reverse drain-back.
6. Inspect the pump wet end and internal condition. Consider component repair or pump replacement only after the external sealing and plumbing checks are complete.

How to reprime the pump safely

Do not allow repeated dry starts

Repriming restores circulation temporarily; it does not repair the fault that allowed the pump to empty. Repeated dry or partly dry starts can overheat seals and damage the wet end.

Switch the pump off at the isolator or circuit breaker. Do not rely only on a timer or automation command.
Release filter pressure. Open the filter air-relief valve only after power is off and keep clear of the filter lid and clamp.
Open the pump lid and fill the strainer pot. Add water to the inlet level, then clean and reseat the lid O-ring.
Restore power and start at the manufacturer’s priming setting. Watch for stable basket flow and air leaving through the filter relief.
Close the air relief when water runs steadily. Stop the pump if it cannot establish flow within the priming time specified for the equipment.
If prime is lost again after shutdown, do not treat repeated manual filling as the repair. Return to the sealing, suction-line and drain-back checks.
