Choose the pump from the installed system—not from horsepower alone
An online product page describes the pump, but it cannot describe the hydraulic system into which the pump will be installed. Filter resistance, pipe diameter, valves, elevation, chlorination, heating equipment and available space all affect whether a model is suitable. This guide explains the measurements and technical documents used to compare pumps before purchase. Fault diagnosis and replacement of a failing existing pump are separate questions.

Six checks determine whether a pump is suitable
The main checks are required circulation flow, pump performance at realistic head, the filter’s permitted flow range, pipe and equipment-pad dimensions, the minimum flow required by connected equipment, and the exact specification of the model being considered.
Horsepower, maximum flow and broad “pool size” claims are descriptive shortcuts rather than complete selection criteria.

How to interpret online pump descriptions
Retail listings simplify the choice into a few large numbers. The installed pool is less simple: flow changes as water moves through suction lines, valves, bends, the filter, sanitising equipment, heating equipment and return pipework.
Motor size is not a compatibility test
Two pumps with similar motor ratings can have different hydraulic curves, port sizes, dimensions, controllers and useful operating ranges.
The largest flow figure is not normal installed flow
Maximum flow is usually published near the low-resistance end of the curve. The pump will deliver less once it is connected to the real pool system.
“Suitable for pools up to…” is only a starting guide
That statement cannot account for pipe length, elevation, small plumbing, filter condition, solar heating, spa jets or an in-floor cleaning system.
A hydraulically suitable pump may still not fit
Union threads, port centre heights, discharge direction and overall pump length vary between brands and model generations.
List the jobs the pump must perform
Routine filtration is only one operating mode. The selected pump must also support any higher-flow or pressure-sensitive task connected to the circulation system.
Daily filtration and skimming
The normal operating range should provide steady circulation through the filter and sanitiser without unnecessary pressure, noise or continuous high-speed operation.
Priming and suction conditions
A pump positioned above water level or connected through a long suction run needs to establish and hold prime reliably. Existing air leaks or restrictions should be corrected rather than hidden with a larger pump.
Cleaning and backwash
Suction cleaners, manual vacuuming, in-floor cleaning and some pressure-side systems may need a different operating setting. A sand filter can also require a higher temporary flow for effective backwashing.
Heating, chlorination and water features
Salt chlorinators, heaters and heat pumps usually need a minimum flow. Spa jets, fountains and waterfalls may create a separate high-flow requirement or justify a dedicated pump.
Use pool volume to estimate the starting flow
Pool volume helps estimate the average circulation rate needed within the chosen filtration window. It does not by itself identify the correct model.
Example: a 48,000-litre pool circulated over eight hours gives a starting estimate of 100 litres per minute.
The result must still fall within the filter manufacturer’s permitted operating range and be checked against the pump curve, connected equipment and real system resistance.Find the duty point on the pump curve
The duty point is the combination of flow and head at which the pump is expected to operate in the installed pool system. Head represents the resistance created by pipework, fittings, valves, elevation, the filter and connected equipment.
Flow falls as system resistance rises
Use the manufacturer’s performance curve to see whether the candidate pump can provide the required flow at a realistic head. The preferred working point should sit within the model’s normal operating range, not at the far edge of the chart.
When the exact system head is unknown, photographs and labels can support a preliminary fit review, but they cannot reveal hidden restrictions or replace on-site flow and pressure checks where those are needed.

Check the filter and connected equipment as one system
The pump must provide enough flow for the pool’s operating tasks without exceeding the filter’s limits or falling below the minimum flow needed by a chlorinator, heater or cleaner.

A suitable pump still has to fit the equipment pad
Before ordering, measure the installation rather than assuming the replacement will drop into the same space. Small dimensional differences can change the plumbing scope substantially.
Pipe and port size
Confirm the nominal pipe size, suction and discharge port sizes, supplied union tails and discharge direction for the exact model.
Centre heights and footprint
Measure from the base to the centre of both connections, plus the pump’s available length, width, motor ventilation space and lid clearance.
Natural pipe alignment
The pump should sit on a stable base with fittings aligned without sideways load. Existing pipes should not be forced into position to make the unions meet.
Service access
Leave room to remove the basket, open the lid, reach drain plugs and undo the unions. A unit that barely fits can be difficult to maintain.
Single-speed or variable-speed?
The choice should reflect how many operating modes the system needs. A variable-speed pump adds control, but it still has to be sized and programmed correctly.
One fixed motor speed
This can suit a simple system when the pump is already well matched to the filter and plumbing. Every task, however, uses the same fixed motor speed.
Different settings for different tasks
Lower-speed filtration and higher-speed priming, cleaning or backwash can be programmed separately. The lowest setting must still keep the chlorinator, heater and flow controls operating correctly.
Check the exact model, electrical version and documentation
Models within the same product family may differ in electrical specification, included fittings, controller functions and warranty conditions. The full model code and manufacturer documentation are therefore more reliable than the family name alone.
Information needed for a meaningful comparison
These details make it possible to compare the published pump data with the visible pool system. They do not reveal hidden restrictions or replace direct flow and pressure measurements where those are required.
When an online comparison is not enough
Published data and photographs can narrow the choice, but some conditions can only be established at the equipment pad. This is especially relevant where the existing system already has weak flow, high pressure, air leaks or undocumented plumbing changes.
The pump curve cannot be matched to a reliable head estimate
Long buried pipe runs, multiple suction lines, elevation changes and concealed valves can make visual estimates unreliable. Direct pressure or flow measurements may be needed.
The present system already has abnormal pressure or poor flow
A stronger pump should not be used to mask a dirty filter, blocked line, suction air leak, damaged valve or other restriction. The cause should be identified first.
Several devices depend on different flow conditions
Heating, solar, in-floor cleaning, spa jets and automation can create competing operating requirements. The complete system may need to be considered rather than the pump in isolation.

Can I buy the same horsepower as the old pump?
Use the old rating as a reference only. Compare the old and new performance curves, filter capacity, connected equipment, port dimensions and electrical requirements. Repeating the horsepower can repeat an old sizing problem.
Is a bigger pump safer because it can run for fewer hours?
Not automatically. An oversized pump can increase pressure, noise, energy use and stress on the filter or plumbing. The better choice meets the required flow efficiently and can support higher-flow tasks when needed.
Can maximum flow be used to compare two pumps?
Only as one boundary of the published range. The useful comparison is flow at the expected head shown on each manufacturer’s performance curve.
Will a variable-speed pump work with an older filter and chlorinator?
Often it can, but the filter limits, chlorinator flow switch, controller schedule and minimum usable speed must be confirmed. Different settings may be needed for filtration, cleaning, heating and backwash.
Can compatibility be confirmed from photos alone?
Photos and labels can support a preliminary review of space, pipe direction, visible equipment and likely plumbing changes. They cannot show hidden restrictions or precisely establish total dynamic head, so some systems still require on-site flow and pressure checks.
The pump must match the system, not only the pool volume
Pool volume provides a starting flow estimate, but final suitability depends on the pump curve, system resistance, filter limits, connected equipment and physical installation dimensions. A complete comparison therefore uses both published manufacturer data and information from the existing pool system.
Where those two sets of information do not agree, the appropriate response is not automatically a larger pump. The restriction, flow requirement or physical mismatch should be identified before the model is selected.
