02 The Pump Runs but Flow Is Weaker Longer runtime will not correct a circulation system that is already restricted.

Pump runtime and effective circulation are different measurements. A pump may run for hours while a blocked basket, loaded filter, incorrect valve position, suction restriction or unsuitable speed reduces actual flow.

Variable-speed pumps make this particularly important. A low RPM can be energy efficient, but the selected speed still has to provide enough flow for the equipment operating on that circuit.

What to change

A generic pressure number is much less useful because filters, plumbing layouts, pump speeds and equipment configurations differ between pools.

If pressure rises

Increasing resistance can indicate that the filter is loading with fine debris, pollen, dust or other material. As spring approaches, the amount of fine material entering an outdoor pool can increase substantially.

Service the filter according to its type and the manufacturer's instructions rather than cleaning it only because a fixed number of weeks has passed.

If pressure drops below normal

Low pressure is not automatically good pressure.

04 Steps or Walls Start Feeling Slippery Early biofilm or algae activity can appear before the water becomes visibly green.

Pay particular attention to steps, benches, corners and areas that receive weaker circulation. These zones can show the first signs of inadequate sanitation while the main body of water still appears clear.

A slippery film can indicate that sanitation is no longer keeping up locally. It does not automatically mean the whole pool needs aggressive treatment.

Some units reduce production or stop generating chlorine at low water temperatures. As conditions change in late winter, confirm how the specific chlorinator is behaving rather than assuming the displayed percentage tells the whole story.

Inspect the cell before increasing output

Scale on the cell plates reduces effective electrode surface and can interfere with production and flow through the cell.

Follow the manufacturer's cleaning procedure. Avoid routinely acid-cleaning a cell when it does not require it, because unnecessary chemical cleaning can reduce electrode-coating life.

Water chemistry

Check Water Balance Before Increasing Spring Chlorination

Chlorinator output should not be used to compensate for a water-balance problem. Run a broader chemistry test before making a large seasonal adjustment.
