Pump not starting

What is checked during diagnosis

Pump startup and priming

Filter pressure

What common symptoms can indicate

These examples show why one symptom is not enough to select a replacement part.

Pump not starting

Possible causes include a timer or controller issue, loss of supply, a seized impeller, a jammed wet end or a motor that cannot turn freely. Hard-wired electrical testing must be completed by a licensed electrician.

Leaking equipment

The source may be a pump lid or seal, union, valve, filter housing, chlorinator connection, heater connection or exposed PVC fitting.

Weak flow

Low water level, air entering the suction side, a blocked basket, dirty filter, incorrect valve position or restricted plumbing can all reduce return flow.

High filter pressure

A loaded cartridge, tired media, incorrect valve position, internal filter problem or downstream restriction may cause pressure to remain high or rise quickly.

Low chlorinator output

Low flow, incorrect salt level, short runtime, scaled cell plates, a worn or failed salt cell or increased chlorine demand may produce similar symptoms.

Unusual equipment noise

The sound may come from motor bearings, cavitation, vibration against pipework, a loose fitting, a heater fan or another moving component.

What happens after the diagnosis

The recommendation depends on the failed component, parts availability, equipment condition and whether the existing setup still suits the pool.

Cleaning or adjustment

Filter cleaning, valve correction, timer changes, pump-speed adjustment or chlorinator setting changes may restore normal operation.

Component service

Accessible seals, fittings or cartridges may be replaced. A scaled salt cell may sometimes be cleaned, while a damaged or worn cell normally requires replacement.

Equipment replacement

Replacement may be more practical when equipment is cracked, badly corroded, repeatedly failing, unsupported or uneconomical to repair.

Licensed specialist work
