Pool pump hums but will not start?
If the humming is coming from the pump motor and the motor does not begin rotating, switch the pump off rather than repeatedly restarting it. The main fault areas are a starting-component problem on applicable motors, a jammed or mechanically restricted wet end, or a motor or shaft that is binding.
What does a pool pump humming but not starting usually mean?
A humming sound does not identify one failed part. The most useful clues are whether the motor previously became noisy or difficult to start, whether debris entered the pump, and whether the pump uses a conventional single-phase motor or an electronic variable-speed drive.

Switch the pump off if the motor only hums
Do not open the electrical enclosure
Capacitors and electronic drives can retain hazardous electrical charge. Internal electrical testing and capacitor replacement should not be treated as routine owner troubleshooting.
Use the correct trade for electrical work
In Victoria, fixed electrical installation work must be carried out by appropriately licensed electrical workers. Internal pump repair is also model- and task-specific and should be handled by a service provider qualified for the work involved.
1. Capacitor or another motor starting fault
On some capacitor-equipped single-phase pump motors, a failed capacitor can leave the motor humming without developing enough starting torque to accelerate normally. Other motor designs use different starting arrangements, so the exact pump and motor model matters.
The pump was mechanically quiet beforehand
A starting-component problem is more plausible when the pump had no history of grinding, squealing, excessive vibration or obvious shaft-related problems.
The problem appeared mainly during startup
Some starting faults first appear as intermittent hesitation or inconsistent startup before the motor eventually stops starting altogether.
2. Jammed impeller or restricted wet end
The impeller is the rotating component inside the pump wet end that moves water. Debris or damaged internal components can restrict rotation enough to prevent the motor from starting normally.
Heavy debris entered the system
Leaves, hair, fibrous plant material and other debris can sometimes pass beyond the basket and reach the impeller area.
The problem appeared abruptly
A sudden no-start condition after a debris event can point toward a wet-end obstruction rather than gradual bearing deterioration.
Internal parts can also bind
A damaged impeller, diffuser or another wet-end component can mechanically restrict rotation even when the accessible basket looks clear.
3. Seized bearings, shaft or motor
Mechanical motor failure is more likely when the pump had already been becoming noisier, hotter or harder to start before it finally stopped rotating.
Grinding, whining or squealing
Progressively worsening bearing noise points toward mechanical wear rather than an isolated startup component.
The motor had been running rough or hot
Increasing friction, bearing deterioration or internal motor damage can increase starting load and eventually prevent rotation.
There was a leak between the motor and wet end
A leaking mechanical seal can allow moisture toward the motor-side and front-bearing area, increasing the risk of corrosion or bearing damage.
Starting had become increasingly difficult
A pump that becomes harder to start over time may have increasing mechanical resistance rather than a sudden isolated fault.

What about variable-speed pool pumps?
Do not automatically apply old single-speed pump advice to a modern variable-speed model. Many variable-speed pumps use permanent-magnet motors, electronic drives and onboard fault diagnostics rather than the same starting arrangement as a traditional induction motor.
Why does the pump hum and then click off?
A click after a failed start does not identify one specific fault. On pumps equipped with automatic thermal overload protection, a stalled or overheating motor may shut down after failing to start. A relay, controller or other switching component can also create a click.
Other faults that can produce a no-start symptom
Supply, control or electrical fault
A supply problem, damaged electrical connection, relay, controller or internal motor fault can prevent normal startup. Electrical measurements should be made by an appropriately qualified person.
Electronic drive fault
On variable-speed equipment, the problem may be in the drive, motor electronics or control system rather than a traditional motor starting capacitor.

Switch it off
Do not leave the motor humming while you investigate.
Record the startup
Note whether it hums continuously, clicks off, becomes hot, trips protection or shows an error code.
Check recent history
Previous grinding, leaking, overheating, difficult starting or a heavy debris event can narrow the diagnosis.
Identify the model
Photograph the pump label so the motor and drive type can be identified correctly.
What if the RCD or breaker trips?
A breaker trip after the motor hums can occur with a hard start, mechanical binding, overload or an electrical fault. An RCD trip points to a different safety concern because it can indicate current leaking to earth.

Can the pump be repaired or does it need replacement?
A humming pump does not automatically need replacement. The repair decision depends on the failed component, the age and condition of the pump, parts availability and whether several faults are present at the same time.
Repair may make sense when
- the fault is isolated and serviceable;
- the wet end and housing remain in good condition;
- there is no extensive motor or water damage;
- parts and labour are reasonable for the age of the pump.
Replacement becomes more likely when
- the motor or wet end has extensive damage;
- multiple major faults are present;
- the pump has required repeated repairs;
- repair cost is poor value compared with a suitable replacement.
