Green water with a high chlorine reading does not automatically need more chlorine
If the pool is green but chlorine already tests high, stop dosing from colour alone. Confirm what the chlorine result measures, then check CYA, pH, water clarity, circulation and filtration. Clear green water can also point to dissolved metals rather than an active algae bloom.
A green pool and a high chlorine result can occur at the same time. The result may be a temporary post-dose reading, free chlorine may be inappropriate for the current CYA, algae may already be dead but still suspended in the water, circulation or filtration may be limiting recovery, or oxidised metals may be causing the colour.
Record free chlorine, total chlorine, pH and CYA, then note whether the water is cloudy green, clear green or mainly green on the surfaces.
Start with the appearance of the water
Colour alone cannot diagnose a pool, but clarity and surface condition help separate the most likely causes before another chemical dose is added.

1. Confirm what the chlorine result actually means
A chlorine number is useful only when you know what was measured and whether the test is operating within its intended range.
FC is the usable chlorine measurement
Free chlorine (FC) is the measurable chlorine available in the water. In an outdoor stabilised pool, it should be interpreted together with cyanuric acid rather than as an isolated number.
TC is not the same as FC
Total chlorine (TC) is free chlorine plus combined chlorine. Combined chlorine is therefore the difference between TC and FC. A high TC reading does not by itself prove that free chlorine is equally high.
A percentage setting is not a water result
A salt chlorinator set to 80% or 100% shows how the unit has been instructed to operate. It does not tell you the current free-chlorine concentration in the pool.
2. Very high chlorine can interfere with pool testing
Do not make several chemical corrections from a result that may be outside the test kit's measurement range.
DPD chlorine tests can bleach out
With some DPD chlorine tests, very high chlorine can partially or completely bleach the colour reaction. CDC notes that above about 10 ppm this can produce a falsely low result or even a zero reading.
If the result conflicts with a recent large chlorine dose, follow the test-kit manufacturer's instructions rather than assuming the water has no chlorine.
High chlorine can distort phenol-red pH tests
High sanitizer levels can interfere with phenol-red pH testing and produce an abnormal purple or falsely high-looking result. Around 10 ppm and above is a common interference range for pool test kits, although the exact limit depends on the method.
Wait until chlorine is within the test method's stated range and retest according to the manufacturer's instructions before making a large pH correction.
3. Interpret free chlorine with CYA and pH
A free-chlorine reading that appears high on its own does not describe the whole sanitising condition of an outdoor pool.
CYA changes how FC should be interpreted
Cyanuric acid protects chlorine from rapid sunlight loss, but increasing CYA also reduces the disinfecting activity of free chlorine. This is why FC and CYA need to be assessed together.
If the stabiliser level is unknown, test it before continuing an algae-treatment sequence based only on a chlorine number.
pH still matters
pH affects sanitizer behaviour, swimmer comfort, scaling and corrosion conditions. But if chlorine is currently very high, confirm that the pH test is reliable before adjusting the water.
4. Clear green water can point to metals rather than algae
If the water is transparent but green, teal or aquamarine, dissolved metals deserve investigation before another large oxidiser dose.
Copper can create blue-green or aquamarine water
Dissolved copper can become more visible after oxidation and may also produce blue-green staining. Possible sources include fill water, copper-containing products and corrosion of copper-containing equipment or components.
Iron can also change colour after chlorination
Iron is more commonly associated with yellow, brown or rusty staining, but iron-containing water can also develop a green or brown tint after a strong chlorine dose.
5. Check circulation and filtration before blaming the chemistry
A good chlorine reading at one test point does not prove that water is circulating effectively through every part of the pool, and sanitiser cannot physically remove dead algae or suspended debris.
Check return flow
Compare the strength of the return jets and look for weak circulation around steps, benches, corners and other areas where green growth persists.
Check pump and valves
Air in the pump basket, loss of prime, blocked baskets, incorrect valve positions or restricted plumbing can reduce effective circulation even while the pump is running.
Check the filter against its own baseline
Compare pressure with the same system's normal clean-filter pressure at the same pump speed. If the colour is improving but haze remains, fine material may still need to be removed through filtration and cleaning.
What to check before adding more chlorine
Verify the test
Confirm FC and TC and make sure the test method is within its useful range.
Measure CYA and pH
Interpret FC in the context of stabiliser and confirm that the pH result is reliable.
Look at clarity
Cloudy green and clear green water point toward different diagnostic paths.
Check water movement
Inspect pump prime, baskets, valves and return flow around the pool.
Check filtration
Remove debris and confirm the filter is actually clearing suspended material.
When the pool needs more than another chemical dose
A structured recovery is more appropriate when the pool has established algae, poor visibility, a heavy debris load, recurring green water or an equipment problem that is preventing normal circulation or filtration.
Established algae
Dark green water, heavy surface growth or poor visibility can require testing, brushing, debris removal, treatment, filtration support and follow-up rather than repeated standalone dosing.
The problem keeps returning
If the pool clears and then turns green again, investigate CYA, chlorine production, pump runtime, circulation and filtration instead of repeating the same treatment.

Why is my pool green even though free chlorine is high?

Should I add more chlorine if the pool is still green?

Why did the water turn greener after I added chlorine?
A strong chlorine dose can oxidise dissolved copper or iron and make the colour more visible. Copper commonly produces blue-green or aquamarine water, while iron can produce green, yellow-brown or rusty coloration. Cloudy water and slippery surfaces make algae more likely than metals.
Can high CYA contribute to recurring green water?
Yes. CYA protects chlorine from sunlight but also changes its disinfecting activity. An outdoor pool with elevated stabiliser can therefore require a different free-chlorine strategy than the same FC number would suggest on its own.
