Start with where fresh water first appears—not where the puddle ends up
Water under a pool pump can come from the mechanical shaft seal, a suction or discharge union, the strainer lid, a drain plug, a pump-body seal or a cracked housing. A leak between the motor and wet end makes the shaft seal a strong suspect. Water at a pressure-side union usually points to that connection, while a suction-side leak may draw air while the pump runs and show water only after shutdown. Pool pump leak locations and what they usually mean
Dry the outside of the pump while it is switched off, remove standing water from the equipment pad and identify the first fresh wet point. Water can run along pipework or the underside of the pump before reaching the ground.

Leak between the motor and pump body: check the mechanical seal
The mechanical shaft seal allows the motor shaft to drive the impeller while keeping pool water inside the wet end. When that seal wears or its sealing surfaces are damaged, water can appear around the joint where the motor meets the pump body.
The location of the leak is more useful than whether it appears only while the pump is running or after shutdown. Leak behaviour varies with pump design and system pressure.

Depending on pump design and how long the leak continues, moisture from the seal area can reach motor-side components and may contribute to corrosion or bearing damage.
Suction-side and discharge-side union leaks behave differently
A leaking union can leave water directly beneath the pump even when the internal pump seals are sound. The important distinction is whether the connection is before or after the pump.
Discharge union
The outlet side is under positive pressure while the pump runs. A damaged O-ring, dirty sealing face, misalignment or damaged union can therefore produce an obvious external drip during operation.
Inlet union
The inlet side normally operates under suction. A poor seal may draw air into the circulation system while running instead of leaking water outward. Water may appear around the connection once the pump stops.
Housing seal or cracked pump body?
Housing O-ring or gasket
If water follows a removable seam between wet-end components, the O-ring or gasket may be damaged, displaced or no longer sealing correctly.
Distorted or damaged component
A new O-ring will not reliably fix a warped or damaged mating surface. The structural part itself may need replacement.
Cracked housing
If water can be traced through a visible crack in the wet end, the damaged housing component must be assessed rather than treating the fault as normal seal wear.
How to narrow down the leak safely
Dry the equipment
With the pump switched off, remove standing water and dry the visible pump body, unions, lid and surrounding pipework.
Find the first fresh wet point
Check the motor joint, both unions, strainer lid, drain plugs and wet-end seams instead of judging the source from the puddle.
Note when it appears
Record whether the fault appears while running, after shutdown or in both conditions. This is especially useful for distinguishing suction-side faults from pressure-side leaks.
Does the pump need repair or replacement?
The puddle itself does not answer this. The decision depends on the failed component and the condition of the rest of the pump.
Repair may be appropriate
An isolated mechanical seal, O-ring, drain-plug or union fault can often be repaired when the housing and motor remain in serviceable condition.
