What it usually means when the pump runs but water does not move
If the pool pump sounds as though it is running normally but the return jets have little or no flow, check three things first: the pump basket, the return jets and the filter pressure. Together they usually show whether the problem is before the pump, inside the pump, at the filter or farther along the return side.
If the pump housing is dry or the pump cannot establish water flow, switch it off rather than repeatedly restarting it.
Quick diagnosis by filter pressure and pump basket
Compare the gauge with the pressure your pool normally shows with a clean filter and normal circulation. There is no single correct filter-pressure reading for every pool.

Three common no-flow patterns
Pump basket will not fill properly
The pump is not receiving or retaining a stable water supply. Check pool water level, the skimmer, suction valves, pump lid seal and obvious suction restrictions.

Basket full, but the pump is not delivering normal flow
Low filter pressure together with weak returns usually means too little water is reaching the filter.
- check skimmer and pump baskets;
- confirm suction valve positions;
- look for suction-side air;
- check the variable-speed setting;
- consider a partially blocked impeller.
Water reaches the filter but struggles to get through
High pressure with a full, stable pump basket shifts attention toward the filter and downstream return side.
- dirty or restricted filter;
- incorrect filter-valve position;
- partly closed return valve;
- restriction through connected equipment.
Check the suction side without turning this into a priming diagnosis
Water supply and valves
The skimmer must remain supplied with water while the pump runs. Check for low pool water, a blocked skimmer basket, a stuck skimmer weir or a suction valve that was moved during vacuuming or servicing.
If the plumbing is not labelled, avoid changing several valves at once. Valve orientation differs between installations.
Air entering before the pump
Continuous bubbles in the pump basket, surging water or bubbles from the return jets can indicate suction-side air.

Check whether the filter is restricting water flow
A restricted filter can make a healthy pump appear weak. Rising pressure compared with the normal clean-filter reading is the most useful clue.
Cartridge filter
If pressure has risen and return flow has fallen, inspect and clean the cartridge using the filter manufacturer's procedure.
A cartridge can remain flow-restrictive even when heavy debris is not obvious during a quick visual inspection.
Sand or media filter
If the pressure rise and manufacturer instructions indicate backwashing is required, follow the correct BACKWASH and RINSE sequence for that filter.
Do not move a multiport valve while the pump is running.
Release pressure before opening the filter
Switch the pump off, disable any timer or automation that could restart it, open the filter air-relief valve and wait until pressure is fully released. Confirm the gauge has returned to zero before loosening a lid, clamp or locking ring.
Stop the pump before every valve change
If the installed valve supports RECIRCULATE, switch the pump off before selecting it. After comparing flow, switch the pump off again before returning the valve to FILTER.
What the RECIRCULATE test can tell you
Flow improves significantly
If return flow becomes clearly stronger while the filter media is bypassed, restriction within the filter or its valve flow path becomes more likely.
This does not identify the failed component by itself.
Flow remains weak
If bypassing the filter makes little difference, move the investigation upstream toward suction flow, pump speed, the impeller and the pump's hydraulic output.
Do not use RECIRCULATE unless the installed valve and manufacturer instructions support that position.
When the problem is closer to the pump
Partial impeller blockage
Debris can restrict the impeller while the motor continues to run. Typical clues are weak returns, reduced skimmer suction and lower-than-normal filter pressure.
Variable-speed setting too low
Compare the current RPM or program with the setting normally used when circulation is healthy. A sudden loss of flow without a programming change usually points elsewhere.
Reduced hydraulic output
If water level, baskets, valves and filter condition are normal but flow remains much weaker than before, the pump may need internal inspection.
Prevent an unexpected restart
Isolate power before accessing internal pump components so a timer, automation system or remote controller cannot restart the pump.
Humming is not the same as running
If the pump only hums or buzzes and never reaches its normal running sound, treat that as a starting or motor fault rather than continuing this no-flow diagnosis.
A practical troubleshooting path
Check the basket
Mostly air means start with water supply, suction and prime.
Check the returns
Confirm whether flow is absent or simply weaker than normal.
Compare pressure
Low pressure points upstream; high pressure points toward filter or return restriction.
Escalate only if needed
If the cause remains unclear, inspect the system before replacing the pump.
When professional diagnosis makes sense
Cause still unclear
A pool equipment inspection is appropriate when the pump runs but the source of low flow cannot be isolated from the basket, pressure, filter and valve checks.
This is especially useful on systems with heating, automation, spa valves or several circulation paths.
Fault has been narrowed to the pump
If the system checks point to the pump itself, the next step is repair or replacement assessment rather than installing a larger pump by default.
Stop the pump if any of these occur
Do not keep the system running
- the pump housing remains dry;
- the pump cannot establish or maintain water flow;
- the pump becomes unusually noisy;
- water is leaking from the pump or filter.
Stop before opening equipment
- before opening a filter;
- before changing a multiport valve position;
- before accessing internal pump components;
- whenever safe operation is uncertain.
