A clear pool still needs a fresh water test before the first swim

Clear water is a good start, but it does not confirm the current chlorine level, pH or circulation. Before using a Melbourne pool after winter, test the water, check that the pump and filter are operating normally, and inspect the pool for algae, unusual residue or contamination.

Checks indicate the pool may be ready for normal use
  • the water is clear and the pool floor is readily visible;
  • there is no visible algae, slippery growth or unexplained residue;
  • a fresh test shows suitable chlorine and pH for the pool;
  • the pump, filter and returns are operating normally;
  • there has been no unresolved contamination event.
Wait and investigate first
  • the chlorine level is unknown or outside the pool's normal target;
  • pH is outside its normal operating range;
  • the water is cloudy or visibility has deteriorated;
  • algae or slippery surfaces are present;
  • flow, pump prime or filter behaviour is abnormal.

Five checks before the first spring swim

You do not need to rebuild the whole pool-care routine before one swim. Start with the checks that show whether the water and circulation system are behaving normally today.

Look at the water and pool surfaces

The water should be clear enough to see the floor easily. Check steps, corners, walls and other low-circulation areas for green patches, slippery growth, film or settled material that was not there before.

Test free chlorine

Use a fresh test rather than relying on the chlorinator display or a result from several days ago. In an outdoor pool, interpret free chlorine with the pool's CYA level and sanitising setup.

Test pH

Victorian Better Health guidance recommends checking chlorine and pH before the first swim of the day. If a correction is needed, use the operating range appropriate to the pool and sanitising system, follow the product instructions, circulate the water and retest.

Check pump, filter and return flow

Make sure the pump primes normally, baskets are not restricting flow and water is returning to the pool as expected. Compare filter pressure with that system's clean-filter baseline rather than using a generic pressure number.

Consider what changed since the last test

Winter rain, a large top-up, wind-blown debris, reduced circulation or the first warm spell can change chlorine demand and water balance. Retest after a meaningful change instead of assuming the previous result still applies.

What should you test today?

Before swimming

Start with free chlorine and pH. These are the most useful immediate checks when the question is whether a clear-looking pool is ready to return to normal use.

Also confirm water clarity, visible surface condition and circulation. A chemical result does not compensate for a pump or filtration problem.

For a spring baseline

Include CYA if its level is unknown or has not been checked for some time. Total alkalinity and the rest of the water balance are also worth checking when pH has been unstable or the pool has gone through substantial rain, topping-up or chemical correction.

Why free chlorine and CYA need to be considered together

Outdoor pools commonly use cyanuric acid to reduce rapid chlorine loss from sunlight. CYA also affects chlorine activity, so a free-chlorine result is more useful when the CYA level is known.

Outdoor chlorine demand changes

Sunlight, warmer water, debris and swimmers can increase the amount of chlorine the pool needs. A winter setting that held chlorine in colder conditions may not keep doing so as spring progresses.

Saltwater pools still need chlorine testing

A salt chlorinator produces chlorine from dissolved salt. A normal-looking controller display or an operating cell does not tell you how much free chlorine is actually present in the pool water.

Do you need one universal chlorine target?

No single number should be presented as correct for every outdoor residential pool without knowing the sanitising system and CYA. Use the measured free-chlorine and CYA results together with the recommendations for that pool's sanitising system.

What changes if the pool was covered through winter?

A cover may leave the water looking exceptionally clean because it has kept out leaves and reduced exposure. Check underneath that clean surface before assuming the pool needs nothing more.

Inspect steps and corners

Look at areas with weaker circulation for fine debris, algae or slippery growth.

Remove organic debris first

Leaves and settled material add chlorine demand. Remove them before making large chemistry corrections.

Run the circulation system

Confirm that the pump primes properly and the filter and returns behave normally after the winter operating period.

Take a fresh test

A cover reduces some forms of contamination and heat loss, but it does not verify chlorine or pH.

What is worth checking first on a spring pool inspection?

When a pool looks clean after a low-use winter, the useful checks are often simple. Before changing several settings or adding multiple chemicals, establish whether the pool has a water-quality problem, a circulation problem or neither.

Chlorinator output versus measured FC

The controller may appear normal while the water test shows that chlorine demand has increased.

Filter pressure versus its clean baseline

A meaningful pressure change is more useful than comparing the gauge with a generic number from another pool.

Debris in baskets and low-flow areas

Small restrictions or pockets of organic material can become more important as pump runtime and temperature increase.

CYA when its history is unknown

Knowing the stabiliser level makes the free-chlorine result easier to interpret in an outdoor pool.

Retest if winter conditions changed the pool before reopening

Melbourne winter can include repeated rain, windy periods and long stretches of reduced circulation. If those conditions changed the water level, added debris or interrupted normal operation, take a fresh test before the first swim.

Use the current water condition to make the decision

If the pool has had substantial rain, a large top-up, accumulated debris or several days without normal circulation, check chlorine, pH, clarity and flow again. Investigate any new cloudiness or unusual chlorine demand before returning the pool to normal use.

Does every pool need to be shocked before spring swimming?

No. A large chlorine dose should have a reason behind it. If the pool is clear, circulation is normal and fresh tests show that the water is operating as expected, automatically shocking it simply because winter has ended may add chemical without solving a problem.

Test first

If free chlorine is low, check whether the likely cause is increased demand, insufficient chlorinator output, sunlight, debris, algae or another change in the pool.

Treat the problem you actually find

Visible algae, contamination and persistent chlorine loss need a response suited to that condition. Follow the relevant chemical product instructions and retest before the pool returns to normal use.

When a professional water test makes sense

Home testing is useful for routine checks. A broader assessment becomes more valuable when the numbers do not explain what the pool is doing.

Chlorine will not hold

Repeated dosing or chlorinator changes are not producing a stable measured result.

pH keeps moving

The pool needs frequent correction or the result changes again soon after adjustment.

The water looks different

Cloudiness, algae, staining or recurring sediment has appeared despite normal-looking equipment.

The system has been neglected or offline

The pool has gone through an extended shutdown, equipment fault, contamination event or long period without reliable testing.

Can I swim if my pool is completely clear after winter?

Check the water first. Clear water is encouraging, but you still need a current chlorine and pH result, normal circulation and no visible algae or unresolved contamination before returning the pool to normal use.

Should I shock my pool before the first swim of spring?

Not simply because the season has changed. Test the water and treat the condition you find. A pool with algae, contamination or abnormal chlorine demand may need a specific treatment, but routine spring use does not by itself justify a large chlorine dose.

Do I need to test a saltwater pool before swimming?

Yes. A salt chlorinator produces chlorine, but its display does not replace a water test. Check free chlorine and pH, and include CYA if its level is unknown or has not been checked recently.
