Brown or tea-coloured pool water can appear after a heavy fall of gum or eucalyptus leaves, particularly when wet leaves remain in the pool overnight or accumulate after wind and rain. The colour alone does not identify the cause. Dissolved plant-derived organic compounds, fine debris, metals, surface staining and algae can create different problems that may look similar from above the water.

What gum leaves release into pool water

Eucalyptus foliage contains a complex mixture of plant compounds, including polyphenols and tannins. When wet leaf material remains in a swimming pool, some water-soluble organic compounds can move into the surrounding water. At the same time, the leaves soften, fragment and create fine particulate material.

Those forms of contamination behave differently. Leaf fragments, soil and decomposed material may settle or be captured by filtration. Dissolved compounds are present in the water itself, so the visible leaves can be gone while a faint amber tint remains.

Tannins, algae or metals: how to tell the difference

Gum leaves are useful evidence when the timing matches the colour change, but they should not automatically be blamed for every brown pool. The way the water behaves after the leaves are removed is more informative.

Organic colour is more plausible when

  • the colour followed heavy gum-leaf accumulation;
  • the water is amber but still transparent;
  • the visible leaves are gone but some tint remains;
  • surfaces are not broadly slippery;
  • the colour developed gradually while leaves remained wet.

Algae becomes more likely when

  • free chlorine is falling unusually quickly;
  • steps or walls feel slippery;
  • green or olive material returns after brushing;
  • water clarity continues to deteriorate;
  • circulation has been poor for an extended period.

When metals deserve investigation

  • the colour appeared after topping up from a particular water source;
  • brown, orange or yellow colour intensified after chlorine was added;
  • rust-coloured deposits are attached to the surface;
  • staining is concentrated around fittings or return points;
  • the pool has a history of iron, copper or manganese problems.
More than one condition can occur at once. Wind and rain can add leaves, soil and dust while a packed skimmer reduces circulation. The final appearance may be a combination of particles, dissolved organics and increasing chlorine demand.

What happens to chlorine after heavy leaf fall

A large leaf load increases the amount of organic contamination entering the pool. Wet plant material softens and decomposes, fine debris moves through the circulation system and packed baskets can reduce water flow.

Free chlorine may therefore fall faster than it did before the leaf event. There is no reliable rule that converts a certain number of leaves into a fixed chlorine dose. Water temperature, sunlight, CYA, pH, circulation and other contaminants all affect demand.

What to check before adding chemicals

Shock treatment, clarifier, algaecide and metal treatment solve different problems. Brown water alone is not enough evidence to choose between them.

Free chlorine Record the current level. A later reading under comparable conditions can show whether unusually high chlorine demand remains.
pH Check pH before making large chlorine or metal-related corrections.
Cyanuric acid CYA provides context for free chlorine, particularly after overflow, dilution or water replacement.
Filter pressure Compare pressure with the pool's normal clean operating condition rather than using an arbitrary number.
Return flow Weak returns may indicate a packed basket, loaded filter or another circulation restriction.
Floor sediment Fine brown material settling in low areas confirms that suspended particles are part of the problem.
Surface marks Fixed stains on steps, corners or beneath old leaf piles should be assessed separately from the water colour.

A practical recovery sequence

Start by removing the physical contamination and restoring normal circulation. Chemical decisions become more reliable once the basic pool system is operating normally.

Remove floating and submerged leaves

Clear the large debris before it softens further and breaks into smaller material.

Empty the skimmer and pump baskets

Packed baskets can restrict water flow even while the pump is still running.

Confirm normal circulation

Check pump priming, visible valve positions and return strength.

Inspect the filter

Clean or backwash it when filter type, debris loading and pressure indicate that service is required.

Test free chlorine, pH and CYA

Use actual readings before making major chemical corrections.

Brush affected surfaces

Pay particular attention to steps, corners and places where wet leaves accumulated.

Vacuum settled material

Remove sediment instead of repeatedly dispersing it back through the water.

Reassess the remaining symptom

Separate transparent colour, suspended debris, surface staining and signs of biological growth.

Should brown pool water be shocked?

Not on colour alone.

A high-chlorine treatment can be appropriate when testing and pool condition indicate an algae or sanitation problem, but it is not a universal treatment for brown water.

If particles are the problem

Vacuuming, normal circulation and effective filtration directly address soil, decomposed leaves and other suspended material.

If iron is involved

Chlorine can oxidise dissolved iron and make discolouration or particulate deposits more noticeable, so metal-related colour should not be treated as algae automatically.

Avoid combining shock, algaecide, clarifier and metal treatment simply because the water looks brown. Multiple unnecessary treatments can make the original problem harder to identify.

Will the filter remove a tea-coloured tint?

Conventional pool filters are primarily designed to capture suspended particles. Dissolved colour may therefore remain after leaf fragments, dust and sediment have been removed.

Signs that filtration is working normally

  • water clarity is improving;
  • settled debris is decreasing;
  • filter pressure remains within the pool's normal operating range;
  • return flow remains stable;
  • the floor stays cleaner after vacuuming.

Repeatedly cleaning a filter that is already operating normally will not necessarily remove dissolved colour faster.

When leaf contact leaves a surface stain

Wet leaves left against a pool finish can produce localised brown, olive or dark marks. Steps, corners, shallow ledges and places beneath leaf piles are common locations.

Brown staining is not automatically organic. Iron and other metals can produce similar colours, so fixed stains should be assessed independently from the colour of the water.

What changes after wind and rain

Melbourne weather can turn a straightforward leaf problem into mixed contamination. Strong winds may add gum leaves, bark, pollen and dust at the same time, while rain may carry additional fine material into an uncovered pool.

After the weather passes, check for visible sediment as well as water colour. Clear loaded baskets and restore normal return flow before judging whether the pool is improving.

If runoff, substantial dilution or storm contamination is the dominant problem, treat that as a separate water-quality event rather than assuming tannins explain everything visible in the pool.

Preventing the same problem next time

  • empty skimmer baskets more frequently during heavy leaf fall;
  • remove floor accumulations before the leaves soften and fragment;
  • check circulation after strong winds instead of waiting for the next routine maintenance day;

Further investigation makes sense when the debris has been removed and normal circulation restored but the pool still does not behave as expected.
