If the pool pump will not turn off, check what is still telling it to run
If a pool pump will not turn off, first check whether it is still receiving a RUN command. If the pump stops from its normal OFF control, look for an active schedule, manual override or automation command. If the controller you expect to stop the pump shows OFF but the pump remains powered, another control path, internal pump schedule, relay or contactor may be involved.
Safety first: do not open the timer, relay or automation enclosure
Owner checks should stop at normal controls, displays and apps
Timer boxes, relays, contactors and fixed pump wiring may contain mains voltage. A screen showing OFF does not make internal electrical components safe to touch.
- Do not remove electrical enclosure covers.
- Do not touch relay contacts, terminals or fixed wiring.
- Do not bridge or bypass a timer, relay or safety interlock.
- Do not force a contactor open.
- Do not use repeated breaker cycling as a substitute for repairing the fault.
- Do not touch wet plugs, sockets, isolators or electrical equipment.

Safe diagnostic sequence
Record the existing state before resetting or deleting schedules. What each controller shows while the pump is still running is useful diagnostic evidence.
Check what is active
Note the pump speed or program, timer status, automation mode and whether spa, heating, cleaning or another pump-dependent function is active.
Check time and day
Compare the clock on the timer, pump and automation system. Separate controllers may not share the same time setting.
Review visible schedules
Look for overlapping filtration periods, pump speed programs, manual run timers and automation schedules.
Use the normal OFF command
Stop the pump only through the normal user control. Note whether it stops and what changes on the other displays.
Timer, internal pump schedule, automation or relay?
The pump is still being commanded to run
Check for the wrong clock time, an overlapping schedule or a manual ON state. If the pump stops normally when the active command is cancelled, an electrical switching fault becomes less likely.
The pump may have its own scheduler
Many variable-speed pump models have onboard timers or programmable schedules; others rely mainly on external automation. An old internal schedule can remain active after the control arrangement has changed.
Another pool function may require circulation
Spa mode, heating, solar control, cleaners or other programmed functions can keep circulation active beyond the normal filtration period, depending on the installed system.
The command changes but the switched load remains energised
A relay or contactor is an electrically operated switch. If all legitimate run commands have been excluded but the pump remains powered, the switching circuit requires qualified assessment.
Variable-speed pumps can introduce a second scheduler
With a variable-speed pump, the controller you see on the wall may not be the only device deciding when the pump runs.
Check which control is active
Depending on the installation, the pump may use onboard schedules, digital inputs or commands from a pool automation system. Do not assume an external timer always switches mains power directly to the pump.
Record the pump display
If the pump remains powered and shows a specific schedule, speed or external-control state, record it before changing settings. That information can separate a programming conflict from an electrical switching problem.
When automation is keeping the pump on
The filtration schedule can end while another automated function still requires circulation.
When a relay or contactor becomes the stronger suspect
Electrical switching moves higher on the suspect list only after legitimate schedules and alternative control paths have been excluded.
The expected controller shows OFF but the pump remains powered
Confirm that the pump is not following an internal schedule and that another automation function is not active. If neither explains the operation, electrical switching should be checked professionally.
The control state changes but the pump does not
A relay can mechanically operate without successfully opening the load circuit. A sound or controller indication alone does not prove that power to the pump has been disconnected.
Did the problem start after a power outage?
Check the displayed time, day, schedules and control mode on the pump and automation system. A restored clock, old schedule or changed manual/automatic mode can make the pump run at unexpected times after power returns.
If the pool has a separate chlorinator timer
Record whether the chlorinator stops when the pump should stop. Different behaviour can show that the pump and chlorinator use separate schedules or control paths. Do not change electrical interlocks to force the two devices to match.
Does continuous running mean the pump itself is faulty?
Not necessarily. A pump that circulates normally and stops when a valid OFF command reaches it may be mechanically sound. Do not replace the pump until control and scheduling faults have been separated from a genuine pump problem.
Control fault more likely
The pump runs normally but operates at the wrong time or responds correctly when the active schedule or automation command is cancelled.
Pump fault may also be present
Noise, overheating, leaking, unreliable starting or abnormal motor behaviour should be diagnosed separately from the failure to shut down on schedule.
What to record before arranging service
Complete equipment area
Photograph the pump, filter, chlorinator, heater if fitted, automation controller, visible timers and surrounding pipework.
Controller displays
Photograph the pump, timer and automation displays while the pump is incorrectly running.
Expected shutdown time
Record the programmed stop time and the time shown on each controller.
What actually stops the pump
Note whether it stops from its normal local OFF control, the automation app or only when the circuit is isolated.

Can a pool pump relay get stuck on?
